Toyota’s answer to VTEC is VVT-i, which is just that silver cam gear on the right.

That’s actually not the same thing as VTEC. That’s variable valve timing. Like Nissans VTC. VTEC is variable valve lift ( and I wouldn’t even call it variable since it’s two different cam lobes that it switched between). VVTI is only an adjustable cam phaser that retards and advances intake timing according to driver needs.
